About The Position

The Special Education Teacher's primary responsibility is to work in partnership with parents, students and general education teachers in accordance with the district's mission and vision, while maintaining compliance with Federal and State regulations, in order to promote student achievement. Provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and work in collaboration with the general education teacher. Assists in the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education and/or Master's Degree preferred.
  • Massachusetts Educator's License (Moderate Disabilities in assigned level)
  • Expertise with behavior management.
  • Expertise with curriculum modification and differentiated instructional practices.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of state and federal regulations.
  • Proficiency in educational diagnostic and prescriptive testing.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of two years; successful experience as a special education teacher in a public school setting at the assigned level.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for IEP team meetings and provides case management for assigned students with disabilities.
  • Serves as a member of the IEP team as appropriate.
  • Works cooperatively with school personnel to accomplish the goals and objectives of the School Department.
  • Develops and implements IEP's with measurable goals.
  • Makes data-driven instructional decisions to improve student outcomes.
  • Interprets both informal and classroom based assessment for students in order to make instructional decisions.
  • Collects data on student performance to improve student outcomes and direct instruction.
  • Administers and interprets formal assessments as appropriate.
  • Selects and adapts materials to assist students with disabilities to access the general education curriculum.
  • Collaborates with regular education teachers to monitor student progress and compliance.
  • Supervises, schedules and trains special education aides working with their students.
  • Plans evidence-based interventions appropriate for individual students and groups of students.
  • Assists general education teachers with specifically designed instruction when necessary.
  • Participates in professional development activities designed to advance teacher knowledge in the areas of instruction, best practices, differentiated instruction, changes in educational policy, and other information as may be necessary to improve classroom instruction and programming for students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of use of statewide testing procedures.
  • Provides consultation to parents, teachers and other appropriate school personnel.
  • Completes all special education paperwork accurately, according to regulations and on time.
  • Adheres to established rules, regulations, laws and appropriate ethical standards.
  • Develops and monitors appropriate transition plans for students at transition age.
  • Obtains and maintains compliant special education student files.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.
