About The Position

Woburn Public Schools Special Education Teacher The Special Education Teacher will provide special education reading services for disabled students across grades.The Special Education Teacher reports directly to the Principal of the School and the Director of Student Services, and is expected to work closely with all district personnel to provide high quality instruction to our diverse student population. S/he will provide a safe, equitable, culturally responsive learning environment with high expectations for all students. This position will provide direct instruction in specialized reading programs as well as support in the inclusion/general education setting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university required
  • Required Licensure: Current Massachusetts's DESE Certification in Moderate Special Needs for corresponding grade levels (PreK-8)
  • Experience working in a diverse educational setting, including the ability to work successfully with students, colleagues, and families from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Competence with technology tools and platforms, including Google applications

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Training and/or knowledge of various reading programs (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading, Lindamood Bell)

Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, culturally responsive classroom environment that is conducive to students’ learning and their ability to comfortably share their authentic selves.
  • A strong background in design and implementation of specialized instruction and curriculum for elementary school in an inclusive classroom.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to students in the Special Education setting.
  • Design and implement modifications to school curricula, differentiated instruction, and positive behavior support programs as needed.
  • Function as an integral member of the instructional support team, including classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and special education service providers.
  • Evaluate student abilities and progress through data collection and a variety of formal and informal assessments, including determining special education eligibility; monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Chair annual IEP meetings and any other special education team meetings as necessary.
  • Write IEP’s and progress notes using data collection across the academic year.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities.
  • Participate in collaborative consultation with special education teams, including service providers as well as Administrators.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct student records as required by law and district policies.
  • Maintain and build relationships and communication pathways with parents and other community liaisons.
  • Abide by state statutes, school committee policies, regulations, and WPS Employee Handbook.
  • Attend all required meetings and perform duties as assigned by Student Service’s Director and Building Administrator(s).
  • Oversee paraprofessional staff in supporting students and in data collection, as appropriate.
  • All other duties as required by the Principal or WPS Administration.
