About The Position

The Special Education Teacher at Bridgeport ISD is responsible for providing instructional strategies tailored to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. This role involves collaborating with students, parents, and staff to develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process. The teacher will implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill development programs for assigned students, ensuring that all preparations are documented as required. A key aspect of the position is conducting assessments of student learning styles and planning appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the diverse needs of students. The teacher will present subject matter effectively, adhering to guidelines established by the IEP, and will employ a variety of instructional techniques and media, including technology, to cater to the capabilities of each student. Collaboration with classroom teachers is essential to modify regular curricula as needed and to assist special education students in regular classes with their assignments. Regular participation in ARD Committee meetings is expected, along with involvement in the selection of instructional materials and resources. In terms of student growth and development, the teacher will conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through both formal and informal testing. Responsibilities also include providing or supervising personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as outlined in their IEPs. The teacher will assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and will consult with district and outside resources regarding the educational, social, medical, and personal needs of students. Classroom management is a critical component of this role. The teacher will create a conducive learning environment that supports the physical, social, and emotional development of students. Managing student behavior and administering discipline, including intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students when necessary, is part of the job. The teacher will also consult with classroom teachers regarding behavior management strategies as per the IEP. Additionally, the teacher will establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, principals, and colleagues, participating in staff development activities to enhance job-related skills. Compliance with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers is mandatory. The teacher will compile, maintain, and file all required reports and documents, attend faculty meetings, and follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. The position also includes supervisory responsibilities over instructional aides.
