About The Position

Special Education Teachers are responsible for providing quality instruction that meets the needs of the student in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Diploma (GED). Additionally, required to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth's statutes and program certification requirements. Position is required to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth's statutes and program certification requirements. Position provides individual and group instruction to adult student inmates with special needs. Successful candidate will maintain classroom, equipment, and inventories; ensure compliance with all DOC regulations; maintain accurate records and submit timely reports; and manage and supervise aides and students in a classroom setting.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors.
  • Ability to engage students with special needs in one-on-one teaching of all five subjects.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult special education.
  • Working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult and special education field.
  • Demonstrated competency in the relevant field of current licensure.
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in special education.
  • Experience teaching children with special needs is required.
  • Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement in Special Education.

  • Master's degree from accredited college or university in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in special education.
  • Experience teaching children/adults/youth with special needs in a correctional or alternative education setting.
  • Knowledge and experience in a correctional education classroom management.
  • Experience of Department of Corrections' institutional policies and procedures.
