About The Position

The Special Education Teacher - Self-Contained position for the 2025-2026 school year is responsible for providing specially designed instruction to special education students. This role involves developing appropriate learning activities and experiences to implement the individual education plans (IEPs) created by the ARD committees for each student. The teacher will collaborate with parents and other professionals to ensure that each student's educational needs are met through tailored instruction and support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or training for subject and level assigned.
  • Demonstrate competency in the core academic subject area assigned.
  • Valid ESL Supplemental certificate required for all elementary content teachers and Special Education teachers.
  • Meets No Child Left Behind Highly Qualified Requirements.
  • Willingness to obtain multiple certifications.
  • Knowledge of the ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting.
  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of student teaching or approved internship experience.
  • Valid ESL Supplemental certificate preferred for secondary content area teachers.
  • Training and certification in Non-violent Crisis Intervention (CPI).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with parents and other professional staff to develop IEPs through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
  • Collect student data to develop present level of academic and functional performance (PLAAFP) statements.
  • Develop goals and objectives based on the student's PLAAFP reflecting the need for specially designed instruction.
  • Use student data to recommend accommodations and modifications to the ARD committee.
  • Collect and maintain data related to the implementation of the student's IEP.
  • Support the development and implementation of positive behavior support plans or functional behavioral assessments.
  • Select and implement appropriate instructional strategies or programs that align with the student's IEP.
  • Work cooperatively with general education teachers to support the implementation of accommodations.
  • Develop and implement daily lesson plans that reflect the student IEPs.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students with disabilities.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Issue IEP progress reports at required intervals.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, and colleagues.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve professional skills.
  • Accurately prepare assigned ARD/IEP documents and participate in ARD Committee meetings.
