About The Position

The Stillwater Area Public School District is seeking a Special Education Teacher (Grades K-5) DCD Long Term Substitute for Rutherford Elementary. The role is estimated to begin in December 2025 and last until March 2026. The successful candidate will implement curriculum and instruction to assist students with social, emotional, and behavioral skills, while also engaging them in their general education coursework as appropriate. This position is part of a dedicated team that supports over 8,000 students, emphasizing high expectations and personal attention.

Requirements

  • An SLD, ASD, ABS, DCD, or EBD licensure issued by the State of Minnesota.
  • Formal preparation and appropriate licensure for the area(s) being taught.
  • Knowledge of current practices in curriculum and instruction for the level(s) and subject area(s) being taught.
  • Knowledge of special education due process rules and procedures.
  • Ability to create instructional strategies that maximize student involvement.
  • Ability to communicate behavior, learning, and interaction expectations effectively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Familiarity with alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures.
  • Interest in pursuing continuing education opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and implements instructional plans aligned with district standards and curriculum, tailored to the unique needs of assigned students.
  • Reviews, selects, and modifies materials and resources to carry out the curriculum plan.
  • Accommodates delivery of instruction and assessment according to students' unique learning strengths and challenges.
  • Instructs students using best teaching practices.
  • Coordinates instruction and related services in the student's IEP and serves as the primary contact for parents.
  • Develops annual education plans (IEP) for students, including present levels of performance, educational needs, goals, and objectives.
  • Ensures compliance with procedural requirements and coordinates among home, school, and other agencies.
  • Maintains required records and data according to established policies and procedures.
  • Establishes and sustains positive relationships with students.
  • Participates in site educational programming to ensure a broad-based experience for students.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with support services staff and outside service vendors.
  • Works with colleges and universities to provide practical learning experiences for education program candidates.
  • Assesses and evaluates teaching practices and student progress.
  • Conducts special education evaluations and re-evaluations.
  • Assesses professional development needs and plans accordingly.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
