About The Position

The Special Education Adapted Curriculum Teacher is responsible for designing and implementing individualized educational programs for students with moderate to severe disabilities. This role involves creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters academic, social, and emotional growth. The teacher will develop and deliver adapted lessons tailored to meet each student's unique needs, using a variety of instructional strategies and assistive technologies. Key responsibilities include assessing students' abilities and progress, developing and maintaining Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and collaborating with other educators, therapists, and support staff to ensure comprehensive care and instruction. The teacher will also work closely with parents and guardians, providing regular updates on student progress and offering guidance to help support learning at home.

Requirements

  • The candidate must have, or be eligible for, a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in Special Education- Adapted Curriculum.
  • They will possess a strong understanding of the principles of special education, including the application of specially-designed instruction and behavior management techniques.
  • They must be adept at fostering a positive learning environment that encourages independence and self-advocacy in students.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential, as is a deep commitment to meeting the diverse needs of students and helping them achieve their full potential.
  • The candidate must also have a solid understanding of best instructional practices and possess positive interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, staff, parents, and the community.
  • They should be committed to adhering to the ethical and professional standards set by the State Board of Education.
  • Additionally, the candidate should be capable of building positive relationships and collaborating effectively with all stakeholders.
  • A thorough understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and related federal, state, and local regulations is also required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with moderate to severe disabilities.
  • Design and adapt curriculum materials and instructional methods to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, including assistive technologies, to enhance student learning and engagement.
  • Monitor and assess student progress regularly, adjusting instructional approaches as needed to support individual growth.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, behavior, and any modifications to IEPs.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, therapists, support staff, and administrators to ensure a comprehensive approach to student education.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians, providing regular updates on student progress and offering strategies for home support.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment that promotes social, emotional, and academic development.
  • Implement behavior management strategies to support a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices and legal requirements in special education.
  • Support students in developing life skills, independence, and self-advocacy.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Attend meetings, including IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and staff meetings, as required.
  • Adhere to the professional code of ethics and maintain confidentiality regarding students' information and progress.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
