About The Position

Wayside Schools is an open-enrollment, tuition-free Pre-K3-12th grade public charter school network that provides over 2,000 scholars across its four South Austin campuses with a rigorous International Baccalaureate education. JOB GOAL: The Campus Nurse (RN) will assist the campus with health services in accordance with the scope and practice defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) and Wayside Schools policies and federal/state law/regulations and mandates. The Campus Nurse will provide appropriate and timely direct health services to students and promote preventive health practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least one year of related experience
  • Valid RN license issued by the Texas Board of Nurses (TBON)
  • Maintains certification in BLS for Healthcare Providers
  • Maintains state certifications for vision, hearing, spinal, and acanthosis nigricans screening
  • Understands and complies with HIPAA and FERPA regulations
  • CPR certified
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Knowledge of all applicable federal, state, and local laws, guidelines, and procedures
  • Knowledge of administrative support and file maintenance techniques
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles
  • Skill in working with various types of equipment including, but not limited to personal computers, fax machines, calculators, printers, thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, audiometers, otoscopes, vision screening equipment, and other basic clinic equipment
  • Skill in working with word processing and spreadsheet computer applications
  • Skill in working in collaborative team-based environments
  • Meet schedule requirements and deadlines for reporting and charting

Responsibilities

  • Apply the nursing process when determining the physical and mental health status of students within the scope of practice defined by the BON.
  • Contribute to the education of students with special needs or chronic health conditions by reporting pertinent data to necessary stakeholders and assisting in the identification of problems, formulation of goals/outcomes, and development of student-centered health plans. Focused assessment of student needs Professional and timely communication of data obtained during the focused assessment Provides safe, focused nursing care to students with predictable health care needs within the scope and practice defined by the BON. Professional and timely communication of changes in student response to therapeutic interventions and expected outcomes.
  • Utilize clinical reasoning and follow policies and procedures when providing direct care to students, ensuring standards of nursing practice are always met.
  • Professionally document clinical activity and maintain a daily log of the nurse’s office visits and activities.
  • Utilize professional written, verbal, and nonverbal communication skills when communicating with students, staff, and parents.
  • Assist as part of the student’s education team, within the scope of practice outlined by the BON, by working with campus/district staff, parents, caregivers, medical providers and the student to meet the health, developmental, and educational needs of students.
  • Assist within the scope of practice outlined by the BON, in partnering with community health systems to provide services for students. Be informed of community health resources available to students and families. Continue to be up-to-date with referral and qualification requirements for community health resources.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student health information as dictated by HIPAA policy
  • Assist with implementing, monitoring, and promoting a safe and healthy environment, within the scope of practice outlined by the BON, by collaborating with staff, medical professionals, county/state/federal public health officials, and crisis management teams during disasters when first aid and sheltering may be required.
  • Utilize standard precautions when providing care. Maintaining a clean, orderly clinic that is appropriately stocked with approved supplies and standing-order medications.
  • Follow all Scopes and Standards of Nursing Practice. Follow all Rules and Regulations as set forth by the Texas Board of Nurses.
  • Follow the Educator Code of Conduct & all policies, procedures, laws, and State/Federal regulations.
  • Performs screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency, and local district policy; these include but are not limited to hearing, vision, acanthosis nigricans, spinal screenings, and BMI calculation
