The Special Education Co-Teacher position at IDEA Public Schools is designed for candidates seeking to gain valuable experience in Special Education teaching. It is suitable for individuals with at least 48 college hours who desire challenging work and opportunities for career advancement in education. RISE, which stands for Reaching Independence through Support and Education, focuses on students with significant cognitive and/or pervasive developmental disabilities. These students require a functional curriculum centered on acquiring daily living and vocational skills to facilitate a successful transition to adult life within the community. The K-12 RISE classrooms, located within general education school buildings, provide instruction in practical academics, communication, community, domestic, leisure/recreation, and vocational skills. The program emphasizes communication, maximum independence, and opportunities for students to generalize skills in natural settings, as well as participate in general education activities with typical peers. Special Education RISE Co-Teachers support these classrooms in either the Academy (K-5) or College Prep (6-12) settings, working with students in lower student-teacher ratios (often 1 to 3) to address their academic needs.
