Job Title: Special Education Paraprofessional Job Site: District - ABLE Program General Job Description: Reports to: Assigned site special education teacher/building administrator. Job Goal: Performssemi-skilled level duties under general supervision to assist the teacher in creating a teaching environment to develop and support the social, communication and intellectual skills of students. Successful performance of the job requires adequate service/people skills to resolve problems and provide information as requested. It requires following general standarized district operating policies to reduce accident and injury to self, students and others. Proper dress standards, attendance and leave policies, confidentiality policies, and health policies of the district are required as a part of job performance. Effective problem solving skills are essential to this position.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in required paraprofessional/paraeducation state and local job training activities.
  • Assists with instruction and activities for individuals or for groups as assigned by teacher.
  • Assists with teaching units and small group rotations.
  • Supervised students in instructional setting, off-campus activities and during non-instructional activities such as recess, assemblies, emergency drills, lunch periods, field trips, etc.
  • Prepares, creates, and/or adapts instructional materials as directed by the teacher.
  • Instructs gross and fine motor activities, art, music, games, unit teaching, reading stories, singing songs, etc. as appropriate for individual students.
  • Assists students with assignments.
  • Serves as main source of information and assistance for substitute as the information pertains to a particular classroom or student.
  • Assists teacher with student behavior management strategies.
  • Responds appropriately to out of control students when necessary.
  • Alerts teacher to special needs of students.
  • Keeps a journal of student behavior that varies from the norm.
  • Serves as a part of the IEP team.
  • May assist students with personal care needs and assist with minor first aid as appropriate.
  • Assists children to and from the bus.
  • May ride a bus with a student if deemed appropriate.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by teacher and/or district administrator.
