About The Position

Assists the Special Education teacher in any and all areas necessary for learning, including working with students one-on-one and in small groups. Implements academic instruction designed by teachers for the purpose of meeting learning goals. Special Education Paraprofessional models a servant’s heart and promotes an attitude of respect, teamwork and professionalism by speaking well of other faculty and staff members; supports entire school system-lower school, middle school, upper school; prays for and with other faculty and staff; encourages others in Godly living and excellence; lovingly holds others accountable; actively pursues ways to encourage members of the schools.

  • Maintain a positive Christian testimony
  • Be involved in a local church of like faith and practice, consistent with the RCS Statement of Faith

  • Strong communication skills both oral and written
  • Ability to meet people comfortably and engage in substantive conversation
  • Must be able to work diligently and independently and make judgments with minimal supervision
  • Ability to handle financial matters with integrity and with concern for confidentiality
  • Ability to use technology
  • Computer/Office Skills – Able to operate a variety of office and classroom equipment including copiers and computers, as well as an ability to use Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Language Skills – Able to speak, read, and write English fluently. Understands and is able to aid students with this subject area
  • Mathematical Skills – Able to compute using appropriate concepts and skills. Understands and is able to aid students with this subject area
  • Reasoning Ability – Able to reason and to teach students to reason.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the classroom teacher as needed, including, but not limited to:
  • Providing direct instruction one on one or in small groups
  • Understanding IEP goals and implementing strategies to attain individual goals
  • Facilitating mainstream opportunities in general education classrooms
  • Complete classroom tasks such as setting up supplies, handing out papers, making copies, assembling booklets or assignments, precisely correcting homework, assisting with projects, etc.
  • Work with the Teacher on prioritizing tasks for timeliness and efficiency
  • Monitor special education students for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • As much as possible, anticipate what needs to be done
  • Accompany students to and from buildings and classrooms
  • Perform yard duty as assigned
  • Ability to connect with students and motivate them in a positive way.
  • Assist in maintaining discipline in classroom and demonstrate effective classroom management skills
  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops, as required
  • Keep attention focused on students and areas assigned at all times
  • Integrates his/her faith in Christ and God’s word into classroom lessons
  • Shows support for the role of parents as primarily responsible before God for their children’s education
  • Demonstrates confidence in interactions with students and
  • Demonstrates confidence in academic subjects
  • Carries out instructions by the teacher to promote student learning
  • Recognizes the authority of the classroom teacher and admonishes students to do the same
  • Works exclusively for the teacher assigned; if asked to work or help elsewhere, permission must be granted by the Director of Special Education
  • Cooperates with the administration in implementing all policies, procedures and directives governing the operations of the school
  • Assists in maintaining a clean, attractive, and well-ordered classroom
  • Accepts a share of responsibility for extra-curricular activities as assigned
  • Willing to listen to the counsel of the classroom teacher and administration, and is teachable
  • Arrives at work on time as per work agreement
  • Reports to all scheduled supervision duties
  • Dresses in a professional way that is set apart from the students
  • Informs classroom teacher each time when leaving the classroom
  • Keeps socializing to a minimum with co-workers
  • Keeps classroom and student information confidential; refers parents to the teacher if questioned about student or teacher performance
  • Is prompt and composed upon entering the classroom and other assigned areas of duty
  • Gives ample notice of absence when able and is conscientious about work responsibilities
  • Demonstrates the character qualities of enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control and perseverance
  • Meets everyday stress with emotional stability, objectivity, and optimism
  • Exercises friendliness and consideration, treating students without partiality
  • Submits respectfully and is loyal to constituted authority
  • Develops rapport with students, parents, and staff to promote a positive learning environment
  • Recognizes the need for good public relations; represents the school in a favorable and professional manner to its constituency and the general public
