About The Position

POSITION OBJECTIVE: The position of Para Educator 5 is done for the purpose of working directly with students who demonstrate significant emotional and behavioral challenges as well as possible adaptive needs, to stabilize their behavior and maximize their learning opportunities. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.) Supports students in educational and classroom settings with significant emotional regulation challenges and adaptive/life skills support needs. Identifies triggers that appear to escalate student. Observes and records data on targeted positive behaviors and negative behaviors. Empowers students to be responsible for their behavior and academic success. Documents student escalations as required. Collaborates with case manager, behavior health team and other staff members to develop and implement positive behavior reinforcement systems, including positive reinforcement charts, daily schedules, routines and interventions. Works with academic content where appropriate with students under the direction of the special education teacher. Implements student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) and Aversive Intervention Plan (AIP) as required for maximizing student success in their learning environment. Provides written intervention summary upon assignment completion. Prepares individual paraeducator training binder including student’s positive behavior reinforcement systems, positive reinforcement charts, daily schedules, and routines. Models positive behavior interventions. Provides follow-up after interventions, including determining the efficacy of intervention recommendations and consistency of implementation. Utilizes approved Safety Care Training. Attends professional development trainings as needed. Attends student team meetings when requested.

Requirements

  • High School Graduation or Equivalent
  • Associates (AA) Degree or higher, two years of college or pass a formal state or local academic assessment that meets specific criteria
  • Experience training or working with special education and/or developmentally or behaviorally challenged students.
  • Valid WA State Driver’s License.
  • First Aid and CPR certification required.
  • Behavior modification programs, including restraint techniques.
  • Adaptive technologic equipment.
  • Non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Computer use and a variety of software programs.
  • Child development and behavior.
  • Functional life skills.
  • Basic academics.
  • Safety procedures for students.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • A variety of jobs and work techniques in the community.
  • Seizure care.
  • Physical restraint of severely behaviorally disabled students.
  • Ability to work with children in an empathetic and confident manner.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team, set shared goals and execute them with a degree of independence.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to model and monitor appropriate student behavior.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect between students, parents and teachers.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents and the public.
  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.
  • Ability to perform all physical activities and meet all physical requirements indicated in section above.
