About The Position

The Special Education Instructional Aide plays a crucial role in supporting students with special needs within the Whittier City School District. This position involves providing instructional and behavioral support, assisting with medical and physical needs, and implementing individualized educational plans under the supervision of instructional personnel. The aide is responsible for fostering a positive learning environment and helping students develop essential skills through various activities.

Requirements

  • Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics of severely handicapped children.
  • Behavior management strategies and techniques and a variety of reinforcement methods and strategies.
  • Basic first aid and emergency treatment procedures.
  • Passing score on the District's Instructional Aide Proficiency Exam, or AA/AS Degree or completion of 48 semester college units; proof of high school graduation or high school proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Assist instructional personnel in the implementation of students' individual educational plans.
  • Tutor individuals and small groups of students with special learning needs to reinforce and follow up learning and training activities.
  • Administer medication in accordance with specific medical instruction.
  • Perform routine first aid, including aiding children experiencing seizures or respiratory disorders.
  • Observe and monitor children with physical handicapping conditions and request appropriate assistance for pupils experiencing physical distress.
  • Provide a variety of skill-building activities with children who experience language and hearing disorders.
  • Monitor and assist students with special learning needs in drill, practice, and study activities as a follow-up to the presentation of lessons by instructional personnel.
  • Direct students into safe learning and play activities and assist in shaping appropriate social behaviors.
  • Assist in the behavior management of acting-out student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques.
  • Assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instructional level of children with special needs.
  • Maintain a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and medical information.
  • Operate and assist students in the operation of a variety of instructional aids and media, and computer-assisted instruction equipment and software programs.
  • Monitor and assist in the remediation of specific learning problems and conditions.
  • Maintain or assist in maintaining an orderly, attractive, and positive environment.
  • Participate in parent conferences and pupil instruction and planning processes.

Benefits

  • $400/year annual stipend with proof of Bachelor's degree or better
  • Hourly wage ranging from $19.60 to $27.58
  • Part-time employment for 10 months with 4.5 - 5.5 hours per day
