About the position
The Special Education Instructional Aide (IA) at Loomis Basin Charter School will assist certified teachers in the instruction and supervision of students with physical, emotional, mental, and communicative disabilities. The role involves preparing instructional materials, monitoring student progress, and helping students develop self-help and social skills. The IA will work closely with individual students and small groups, providing support in various academic and non-academic activities, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist the teacher(s) in instructing individuals or small groups of students with disabilities.
- Provide feedback to the teacher on student performance and behavior.
- Prepare classroom and instructional materials for student use.
- Assist in testing students and correcting their work.
- Maintain a clean and orderly instructional environment.
- Supervise students during classroom activities, meals, and field trips.
- Lead student activities and academic tasks as assigned.
- Monitor and assist students in various activities.
- Perform clerical duties such as taking roll and maintaining records.
- Operate office and audio-visual equipment.
- Facilitate student involvement in non-academic activities.
- Assist students in developing self-help skills and personal hygiene.
- Prepare students for mainstream classes according to established procedures.
Requirements
- Valid First Aid Certification.
- Experience in special education.
- Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults.
- Basic knowledge of child guidance principles and practices.
- Understanding of instructional methods for students with special needs.
- Ability to assist in adaptive P.E. and therapy activities.
Nice-to-haves
- Knowledge of basic subjects taught in schools, including mathematics and English Language Arts.
- Experience with record-keeping and data-tracking techniques.
- Familiarity with Non-Crisis Intervention (NCI) methods.
