About The Position

Special Education Health and Safety Aide/Van Driver is responsible for the safe, respectful, and supportive care of students with disabilities. This includes transporting students to and from school, assisting with mobility and personal care needs throughout the school day, and supporting students during instructional periods, transitions, and bathroom routines.

Requirements

  • Bilingual, Spanish/English
  • high school diploma is the minimum requirement.
  • A valid Arizona driver's license is required.
  • A Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card is mandatory.

Nice To Haves

  • an associate's degree or at least 60 college credit hours.
  • Safety practices, first aid, and emergency procedures.
  • Familiarity with transporting students with disabilities, including knowledge of appropriate safety equipment and protocols, is often preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a school van or small bus to transport students with special needs.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections before and after routes.
  • Ensure the proper and secure use of wheelchair lift, seat belts, and restraints.
  • Maintain timely and safe pick-up and drop-off schedules.
  • Monitor student behavior and health during transport.
  • Assist students in moving safely between classrooms, lunch and other school locations.
  • Support students within classrooms as directed by the teacher or support staff, which may include: Helping student stay on task Providing mobility or positioning support Assisting with classroom materials and transitions
  • Escort and assist students in restrooms ensuring student safety
  • Monitor student for health, behavioral, or safety concerns throughout the day and respond appropriately.
  • Support implementation of IEP accommodations, behavior intervention plan, and safety protocols.
  • Provide physical support and supervision to students with mobility needs, including the use of wheelchairs.
  • Respond to medical or behavioral emergencies using appropriate interventions and first aid.
  • Follow individualized health care plans and behavior intervention plans under the direction of school personnel.
  • Communicate regularly with teachers and special education staff about student needs or incidents.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs related to transportation, medical incidents, or behavior.
  • Participate in professional development and training related to safety, disability awareness, first aid/CPR, and student care.
