About The Position

Special Education Coordinator At Cornerstone School, we believe that strong instruction creates meaningful opportunities for every student—and we’re looking for a Curriculum Coordinator who is passionate about empowering educators and bringing learning to life. In this role, you’ll serve as an instructional leader, guiding curriculum development and supporting effective teaching practices for students with significant intellectual disabilities. You’ll provide hands-on training and coaching to teachers and instructional assistants, helping them build confidence, consistency, and skill in delivering high-quality, student-centered instruction. Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor in Severe Intellectual Disabilities, Masters preferred
  • Certification: Special education and/or special education administration
  • Experience: Experience as teacher of children with severe intellectual disabilities
  • Substitution: Experience working in a supervisory capacity in special education or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledgeable of current practices in the education of children with severe/profound disabilities and the ability to demonstrate these practices and strategies.
  • Ability to remain current in the latest educational developments in the education of children with severe/profound disabilities.
  • Knowledgeable of developmentally appropriate practice and ability to teach others.
  • Knowledgeable of Employment First
  • Knowledgeable of positive guidance techniques and ability to teach others.
  • Knowledgeable of methods of behavior management and the ability to teach others.
  • Ability to demonstrate, when needed, strategies and methods for other staff to model.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with staff, parents and supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director in the development of a curriculum representative of best practices and designed to meet high standards of as measured by the state alternate assessment.
  • Assume all teacher responsibilities during teacher absence or vacancy.
  • Provide direct instruction and training to teachers to achieve high standards of instruction for Cornerstone School students.
  • Assist teachers in training paraeducators (teacher assistants) in order to maintain conformity throughout classrooms in providing high standards of care and education for Cornerstone School students.
  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation and administration of progressive special education programs such as transition services
  • Monitor the educational program instruction and curriculum in all classrooms to maintain a high level of conformity and to assure all classrooms are motivated to achieve high standards.
  • Assist in the training of therapists and teachers to integrate therapies within the classroom environment in a way that enhances, supports and enriches the classroom curriculum
  • Perform frequent classroom observations in order to make recommendations for age appropriate and creative activities for the age of the students enrolled within the classroom.
  • Assist in the formal evaluations of teachers and paraeducators providing a formal plan for improvement of skills required for staff to maintain high standards in the education of Cornerstone School Students
  • Provide direct analysis of data collected for a functional behavior analysis as part of the process of developing strategies to address classroom behavior challenges.
  • Provide leadership in brainstorming solutions to various educational and school related problems.
  • Maintain staffing schedules and ratios according to the state regulations including covering in the absence of a special educator if needed.
  • Assist the Director in interviewing prospective employees of Cornerstone School.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Provide on-going training, encouragement and support to teachers and teacher assistants to help them develop into an educational team.
  • Establish scheduled and periodic meetings with teachers and teacher assistants as a means of communication and training.
  • Review and monitor the quality of the weekly lesson plans submitted by teachers.
  • Review and monitor all individual education Plans and progress reporting
  • Chair IEP and 6 month reviews
  • Establish agendas and topics for meetings pertinent to the groups meeting on a regular basis for problem solving and training. The groups include the teachers, teacher assistants, clinical staff
  • When necessary, provide regular education teachers with supports for including children with special needs.
