About The Position

This position is responsible for screening, selection and professional growth for individual departments within special services. The coordinator’s focus is collaboration with building administrators with an emphasis on student achievement, continuous improvement, and the coordination of all aspects of student services under IDEA. This position is expected to assist in the advancement of initiatives to enhance quality teaching and student learning for all students who receive special education in general education buildings and alternative programs. This position is part of the Special Services leadership staff who are members of the Learning Services Department and reports to the Executive Director of Special Services.

Requirements

  • Master’s in Special Ed or related area
  • Kansas certification and experience in LD, ED, Gifted and/or Autism or related area
  • Kansas certification in Building Level Leadership
  • Knowledge of State and Federal regulations for Part B (3-21 year olds) services for students with exceptionalities
  • Experience in providing staff development in the areas of Special Education
  • General knowledge of procedural requirements and implementation of the IDEA
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
  • High degree of motivation, responsibility, and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability in compiling, organizing, and analyzing data
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced work environment
  • Highly collaborative team player
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to self-initiate areas of opportunity, make recommendations for improvement, and follow up as necessary to achieve desired results

Responsibilities

  • Collaboration with other Learning Services Department staff to develop and implement Learning Services student achievement initiatives, including effective instructional strategies for targeted learners, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), and the Student Intervention Team process.
  • Coordinate special services programs and services in buildings, including the assessment and implementation of various best practices in instruction, behavioral interventions, and procedural requirements.
  • Provide leadership and staff development to building staff, principal groups, and special services departments on topics such as collaboration, co-teaching, effective instructional strategies, behavioral interventions, transitions, and special education processes.
  • Supervise and coordinate individual departments within Special Services, including planning for professional development days.
  • Provide information, guidance, and training to special services staff on special education legal requirements and processes.
  • Facilitate IEP team meetings when teams are struggling to reach consensus.
  • Act as a support and contact for families of students receiving special education services.
  • Human Resources and personnel responsibilities including screening of Special Services applicants, staff appraisal processes including professional growth plan development and monitoring and staffing projections of both certified and classified staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
