About The Position

The Special Education Consultant assists the Director of Special Education by assisting teachers to properly serve students and comply with all special education regulations and requirements.

Requirements

  • Michigan Special Education teaching certificate
  • 10 or more years of successful experience as a classroom teacher in special education

  • Special Education leadership experience preferred
  • Master's Degree in Special Education and/or Teacher Consultant endorsement preferred

Responsibilities

  • Review and audit all special education documents, including IEPs, REEDs, MDRs, METs, FBAs, IAESs and 504 plans.
  • Assist special education teachers in the management of their caseload of Special Education students, including IEP's, REED's & MDR's, to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Assist special education teachers with the coordination of testing accommodations for students with IEP's.
  • Orient and mentor new special education teachers.
  • Draft and implement Corrective Action Plans if required.
  • Assist the Director of Special Education and Assistant Superintendent in the hiring, training and evaluating of all assigned Special Education personnel.
  • Assist with the monitoring, development and implementation of all aspects of the special education program process.
  • Participate in Child Find process and Special Education PLC.
  • Collaborate with school-based administrators and central office administrators regarding the discipline of students with disabilities.
  • Facilitate and/or participate in all matters of dispute resolution with the Michigan Department of Education and the Office for Civil Rights pertaining to students with disabilities; manage mediation and due process procedures.
  • Ensure Special Education teachers maintain accurate digital and/or paper files for special education students.
  • With the Director of Special Education, oversee the delivery of special education services by outside providers.
  • Plan and deliver training related to special education for school staff.
  • Advise general ed teachers of appropriate accommodations for students with IEPs.
  • Keep informed of legal requirements and mandates governing special education and assure that staff and programs are in compliance.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
