About The Position

The Special Education Teacher (LIFE SKILLS) position at Watertown Public Schools involves working collaboratively as a co-teacher to support students with diverse academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs at the secondary level. The role requires the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and behavior management plans, as well as conducting diagnostic evaluations to identify learning issues. The teacher will create a positive classroom culture and provide differentiated instruction across all academic content areas. This position is essential in ensuring effective communication with students and parents, encouraging parental involvement, and training paraprofessional staff to support student learning.

Requirements

  • Current State of Connecticut Teaching Certificate #065, #165 or #265

Responsibilities

  • Helps to create a positive classroom and school culture
  • Provides academic, social and emotional education and supports through the preparation and implementation of engaging, interactive lessons
  • Co-teaches with specific content teacher, providing differentiated instruction
  • Case manages the development and implementation of IEPs for students assigned to their caseload
  • Assists students and teaching staff in implementing students' IEPs and behavior management plans
  • Conducts diagnostic evaluations of students for the purpose of identifying learning issues and/or social, emotional or behavioral needs
  • Observes, collects data, and evaluates students' progress toward achieving IEP goals and objectives
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents
  • Implements innovative and effective behavioral strategies and techniques based on students' needs
  • Implements behavioral intervention plans with fairness and fidelity
  • Provides differentiated and integrated instruction for all academic content areas
  • Works with all staff to modify and accommodate for students with special needs
  • Directs, schedules and assists in training paraprofessional staff to support students' learning
  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned by the Interim Director of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services
