About The Position

This is for an assistant role (PCA or TA) in a special education classroom at the Franklin Learning Center. There are several positions available in multiple programs; though no experience is required, person must be willing to learn and have a heart for children with special needs. A Teacher Assistant (TA) assists a teacher in maintaining a positive learning environment in the classroom, ensuring the continuance of the education program developed by the teacher. A Personal Care Assistant (PCA) assists a student with self-sufficiency, communication, interpersonal, social, academic, and mobility skills. The PCA assists a student in accessing their educational program which could include assistance with balance, visual perceptual activities, fine and/or gross motor skills, boarding/exiting school van, prompts to stay focused.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a current certificate in first aid.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a current certificate in CPR.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain certificate in LIU-approved crisis management and intervention program, preferred.
  • Must obtain highly qualified status within one year from date of hire.
  • Relevant experience working with students in an educational setting, preferred.
  • Patience, flexibility, and positive attitude.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively with teachers and staff.
  • Must complete twenty (20) hours of professional development related to assignment each year (July 1-June 30) to continue employment.
  • Must obtain 'qualified' status within one (1) year from date of hire.
  • Certificate of Competency - free of cost and can be acquired on the job OR CAPE test.
  • OR having an associate's degree or higher.
  • OR having completed 2 years (48 credits) of postsecondary study.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a teacher in maintaining a positive learning environment in the classroom.
  • Ensure the continuance of the education program developed by the teacher.

  • Help students access their educational program.
  • Provide assistance with balance, visual perceptual activities, fine and/or gross motor skills.
  • Assist students in boarding/exiting school van.
  • Provide prompts to help students stay focused.
