About The Position

The Special Education Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting students with disabilities, enabling their participation in educational programs. This position involves providing personal care services, assisting with mobility, and ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment. The assistant works closely with teachers and supervisors to address the needs of assigned students and uphold school policies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.
  • Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., negative tuberculosis test).
  • Valid state department of education permit appropriate for the assignment.
  • Ability to physically assist students with disabilities (e.g., mobility, transferring, positioning).
  • Self-directed, congenial disposition, and strong diplomacy skills.
  • Successful completion of communicable disease, child abuse/neglect, behavioral management, CPR, and/or first aid may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of assistive and augmentative devices.

Responsibilities

  • Performs personal care services for students with disabilities to facilitate their participation in educational programs.
  • Checks with the supervisor to learn about the needs of the assigned student and seeks advice when expectations are unclear.
  • Promotes effective communication and assistance, using problem-solving techniques to address questions or concerns.
  • Assists students with disabilities in participating in appropriate learning activities as directed by the teacher.
  • Helps with bus loading and unloading procedures and inspects safety devices.
  • Follows prescribed medical plans and assists students with personal hygiene care as trained by a licensed health care professional.
  • Renders basic first aid and administers medications when a school nurse is unavailable.
  • Maintains confidentiality of privileged information and respects personal privacy.
  • Participates in staff meetings and professional growth opportunities as directed.
