The Special Education Assistant - ASD 1x1 position at Keewaydin is designed to provide essential support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a structured learning environment. Under general supervision, the assistant will work closely with students who have moderate to severe disabilities, helping them to achieve their educational and therapy goals. This role involves collaborating with Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) staff to develop and implement individualized lessons and activities tailored to the unique needs of each student. The assistant will play a crucial role in fostering a safe and productive learning environment, ensuring that the needs and legal rights of special education students are respected and upheld. The position requires the assistant to engage in various activities that promote personal skills and reinforce classroom learning. This includes monitoring student activities, promoting respect among peers, explaining social norms, and de-escalating confrontations when necessary. The assistant will also be responsible for maintaining documentation related to student behavior and progress, which is vital for the Support and Advocacy for Independent Living Program (SAIL), Individualized Education Program (IEP), and Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA). Additionally, the assistant will assist students with daily hygiene and health-related needs, as well as support them in community, recreational, and vocational training activities. This role is particularly focused on providing support in the least restrictive environment, ensuring that students can successfully participate in resource settings. The assistant may also be encouraged to work additional hours as a bus aide, further contributing to the students' overall educational experience. The position is part-time, with a full-time equivalency of 75.63% over 41 weeks, and is governed by the union ESP(28).
