About The Position

The Special Education Assistant at Franklin Middle School is responsible for providing support to students with special needs, specifically those with Other Health Impairments (OHI). This role involves assisting educational staff in developing and implementing individualized lessons and activities, helping students achieve their therapy and educational goals, and maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Requirements

  • Completion of 90 quarter/60 semester college credits or a passing score of 460 on the ParaPro Assessment with a high school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience working with children, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED, Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training, and Special Education Orientation required within one year.

  • Knowledge of behavior intervention plans and special education policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support services to children with moderate to severe disabilities enrolled in MPS.
  • Assists MPS staff to facilitate educational functions and maintain a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment.
  • Assists students in learning processes and reinforces positive behavior.
  • Monitors student activities and enforces District policies and rules of conduct.
  • Records data for academic and behavioral assessments and maintains files of student progress.
  • Maintains behavior documentation for IEPs and Functional Behavioral Assessments.
  • Monitors work, corrects papers, and transitions students for medications, meals, and classes.
  • Attends to students' daily hygiene and personal health-related cares.
  • Promotes student independence in various activities and vocational training.
  • Reports learning problems and behavioral issues to supervisors.
  • Prepares the classroom environment and materials for student use.
  • Provides customer service to parents and guardians regarding school rules and student progress.
  • Demonstrates courteous behavior when interacting with students and staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and records.
