About The Position

The Special Education Assistant at Folwell Elementary provides essential support to students with special needs in a learning environment. This role involves assisting MPS staff in developing and implementing individualized lessons and activities for students with disabilities, ensuring that they meet their therapy and educational goals. The position requires personal transportation as it may involve moving between sites.

Requirements

  • Completion of 90 quarter or 60 semester college credits in Education, Child Development, Behavioral Sciences, or a related field OR a passing score of 460 (or higher) on the ParaPro Assessment and a high school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience working with children.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED, de-escalation and crisis response training, and Special Education Orientation required within one year of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree in Education or a related field.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support services to children with moderate to severe disabilities.
  • Assist MPS staff in facilitating educational functions and maintaining a safe learning environment.
  • Work with students to improve personal skills and reinforce classroom learning.
  • Monitor student activities and promote respect, explaining social norms and disciplinary consequences.
  • Maintain behavior documentation and anecdotal information files for IEPs and FBAs.
  • Monitor work, correct papers, and transition students for medications, meals, buses, and classes.
  • Attend to students' daily hygiene and health-related cares as directed by licensed staff.
  • Assist students in community, recreational, school, and vocational training.
  • Provide assistance to students in classrooms and after-school programs.
