About The Position

The Special Education and 504 Process Director plays a vital role in ensuring that a K-12 school district complies with federal and state mandates while delivering effective support to students with disabilities. Job Summary The Special Education and 504 Process Director oversees the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 plans. This role ensures that all processes—from initial referral through evaluation and service delivery—adhere to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Requirements

  • Education: Minimum of a Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Administration, or a related field.
  • Certification: Valid state-issued certification in at least one special education field.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of successful special education teaching experience.
  • Skills: Expert knowledge of IDEA and Section 504 regulations, strong communication, and proficiency in student information systems.

Responsibilities

  • Compliance and Process Management
  • IEP Coordination: Facilitate and lead the development, implementation, and annual review of IEPs.
  • 504 Plan Oversight: Manage the district’s Section 504 process, including determining eligibility, developing accommodation plans, and conducting 3-year reevaluations.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate, secure student records and ensure all state and federal reporting timelines are met.
  • Discipline Support: Advise administrators on Manifestation Determination Reviews and legal procedures for students considered for suspension or expulsion.
  • Instructional Leadership and Training
  • District Leadership: Participates in and contributes as a member of the District Leadership Team.
  • Professional Development: Provide training for general and special education staff on current laws, inclusive practices, and effective specialized instruction.
  • Teacher Mentorship: Coach staff on data collection, behavior intervention plans, and navigating special education software.
  • Assessment: Coordinate the district assessment team and oversee the administration of cognitive and academic evaluations for SPED and 504 students.
  • Classroom Teaching: Provide support in the absence of a SPED teacher to implement daily lessons for students K-12.
  • Collaboration and Liaison
  • LEA Representative: Act as the Local Education Agency (LEA) representative in complex IEP and 504 meetings.
  • Family Liaison: Serve as a primary point of contact for families to foster positive, collaborative relationships and resolve disputes.
  • External Agencies: Coordinate with outside agencies, such as juvenile centers or medical professionals, to secure comprehensive services for students, such as Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy, Pre-K providers for early screening and training, and outside placements such as Ozaman.
