About The Position

Assist the special education teacher to provide for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher and/or diagnostician.

Requirements

  • Educational Aide I Paraprofessional Certificate
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Experience working with children/students, parents, or persons with disabilities

Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Keep accurate records of students with disabilities and furnish to appropriate personnel in a timely manner
  • Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus duty, playground, and community
  • Assist teacher and/or diagnostician in maintaining, copying, transferring confidential folders as required
  • Assist special needs students with individual tasks as may be required including, but not limited to, transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene
  • Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention
  • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and safety needs through in-service and/or teacher direction
  • Work with and/or prepare materials for individual students or small groups to develop skills through instructional activities under teacher direction
  • Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students
  • Perform other duties that enhance the safety, security, and instructional needs of the campus as requested
  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and legal/local board policies
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned
  • Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
