About The Position

This position involves helping to meet the physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities both inside and outside the classroom. The aide will assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), focusing on self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. The role operates under the general supervision of a principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher, requiring adherence to federal and state laws, as well as district policies. Key responsibilities include supervising students in various school settings, assisting teachers with instructional material preparation and behavioral interventions, and participating in staff development. The aide will work with individual students, small groups, and whole classes, specifically assisting students with severe developmental and communication delays, lack of social interaction, and behavioral concerns to implement modifications and achieve instructional goals. This includes reinforcing skills, managing student behavior, intervening in crisis situations, and assisting with testing instruments and technology integration. The role also requires incorporating social and emotional learning, behavioral strategies, and social skills development daily. Administrative tasks such as filing, copying, inventory, equipment maintenance, and billing for Student Health and Related Services (SHARS) are also part of the job. The aide will assist students and teachers with augmentative communication and adaptive/assistive devices, and provide physical assistance to students, including transferring, lifting, positioning, and personal care. Additionally, the aide will orient substitutes, meet with staff to evaluate student progress, and participate in virtual classroom environments and professional development activities.

Requirements

High school diploma/GED or higher
Forty-eight (48) hours from an accredited college or university
Experience working with students and parents
Must possess or be eligible to obtain a paraprofessional certificate issued by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)
Acquire certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Heimlich maneuver within available district training calendar
Acquire certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) within available district training calendar
Must be familiar with/able to use Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy (OT/PT) apparatus
Must be able to communicate, listen, read, write, and comprehend the English language sufficiently to use it easily and readily in daily communication

Responsibilities

Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom to include lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
Assist teacher with instructional material preparation, behavioral interventions, and physical needs of student(s).
Participate in staff development training, and implement learned strategies into the curriculum.
Work with individual students, small groups, and whole class as assigned by teacher.
Assist students with severe development and communication delays, lack of social interaction and behavioral concerns to implement modifications and master individual instructional goals.
Reinforce skills and units of instruction that have been taught by the teacher.
Adhere to the guidelines established in the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) under the supervision of the assigned teacher to include documentation of services provided.
Help manage the behavior of assigned student(s) to include intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive and dangerous students as needed.
Assist with testing measurement instruments and technology integration into the curriculum.
Incorporate social and emotional learning, behavioral strategies, and social skills development on a daily basis.
Assist teacher with filing, copying, inventory and maintenance of equipment, and maintain responsibility of billing for Student Health and Related Services (SHARS) as required.
Assist students and teacher in the use of augmentative communication and/or adaptive/assistive devices as appropriate.
Help meet the individual needs of student(s) including transferring to and from wheelchairs; lifting and positioning; interpreting instructions; and assisting with physical needs and personal care to include but not limited to feeding, bathroom needs, diaper changing, and personal hygiene.
Provide orientation and assistance to substitutes.
Meet with teachers, administrators, and SPED support staff to evaluate and assist with student progress.
Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.
Assist in the creation and actively participate in a virtual classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular school business hours to confer with district stakeholders as needed.
Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
Follow established safety procedures to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.
