The Special Education Aide plays a crucial role in supporting the special education teacher in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities within a special education setting. This position requires working under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of certified teachers. The aide will assist in implementing various classroom programs, which include self-help, behavior management, and instructional programs tailored to the unique needs of each student. The aide is expected to maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment, prepare instructional materials, and help with the inventory and maintenance of classroom equipment. Additionally, the aide will assist in keeping administrative records and provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers when necessary. In terms of student management, the Special Education Aide will assist students with physical disabilities according to their individual needs, which may involve transferring students to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning them as required. The aide will also support students with personal care needs, including feeding, bathroom assistance, and personal hygiene. Managing student behavior is a critical responsibility, which may involve intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior when necessary. The aide will work closely with individual students or small groups to help develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises as assigned by the teacher. Supervision of students throughout the school day, including during lunch, on the bus, and on the playground, is also part of the role.
