About The Position

The Special Education Classroom Assistant (SECA) plays a crucial role in supporting Special Education teachers in elementary and high schools by assisting in the instruction of students with various disabilities. This position involves providing one-on-one support to students, helping them with personal hygiene, daily living skills, and reinforcing learning concepts as outlined in their Individual Education Programs (IEPs). The SECA is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of students, particularly those with severe disabilities, and may also assist in physical tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
  • Completion of at least 60 semester hours of college credit or successful completion of a paraprofessional exam.
  • Good knowledge of the characteristics of students with various disabilities.
  • Good knowledge of English grammar and spelling, and basic mathematics.
  • Ability to work with students with disabilities aged birth to twenty-one years.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and maintain basic written reports.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Skill in the operation of photocopying and audio-visual equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Special Education teachers in reinforcing efforts with children with various disabilities.
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring services to present or reinforce learning concepts.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene services, including toileting and changing soiled diapers.
  • Help students with orthopedic impairments by adjusting tools and equipment used in classrooms.
  • Instruct students in daily living skills required for independent maintenance.
  • Accompany students to swimming pools and medical clinics to assist with personal services.
  • Assist in feeding students who are unable to do so themselves.
  • Take notes in classrooms for students who are unable to do so themselves.
  • Correct homework assignments and examination materials.
  • Maintain written records of students' behavior and assist teachers in this task.
  • Accompany students and teachers on class field trips.
  • Attend workshops and in-service training to update job-related skills.
