This position is designated as a Confidential Assistant and is EXEMPT from certain provisions of the State Human Resources Act (GS 126). This position serves at the pleasure of agency leadership. The Special Assistant to the Secretary position reports to the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), and supports the Secretary’s Office. This is a highly visible, confidential support role that interacts with all levels of leadership and supports special projects and travel logistics. An essential duty of this position requires traveling with the Secretary to meetings and events, preparing data and information to ensure the Secretary and accompanying staff are prepared, and that meetings are successful and achieve intended outcomes. Equally important, this position regularly works with the Secretary and Public Affairs staff to expand and improve the department’s social media reach and engagement. The position routinely coordinates, strategizes and works with Public Affairs staff and the department’s divisions to amplify the department’s messages and activities through social media platforms and other communications efforts. Tasks include but are not limited to serving as a key point of contact at events, ensuring appropriate and timely follow-up to meetings and events, publishing approved social media content, analyzing social media engagement information and data to assess the effectiveness of DEQ social media content, implementing creative ways to improve the effectiveness of future engagements and outreach efforts, and driving state vehicles to offsite locations. This position regularly interacts with internal and external agency stakeholders, including the media, handles or receives confidential information, and reviews and summarizes data and information used in decision making.
