About The Position

The Special Assistant to the Chief Security Officer at Stony Brook University is responsible for safeguarding university executives and visiting dignitaries from safety and security hazards. This role is critical for maintaining the safety and security of senior officials and involves a variety of operational duties, including close protection, emergency response, and logistical coordination for executive travel. The incumbent will work closely with various stakeholders to ensure a secure environment for university events and activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, or related field.
  • Two years of full-time paid experience in law enforcement, emergency management, or related field.
  • Experience in emergency management practices, including planning, response, mitigation, and recovery efforts.
  • NYS Basic EMT certification.
  • Certified DCJS Police Officer with maintained certification during employment.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License with a clean motor vehicle record.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, or related field.
  • Eight years of full-time paid experience in law enforcement or emergency management.
  • Five years of supervisory experience in law enforcement or emergency response organizations.
  • NYS EMT-P certification and completion of FEMA Professional Development Series training.

Responsibilities

  • Safeguard university executives and visiting dignitaries from security and safety hazards.
  • Maintain an inconspicuous security presence and provide seamless protection.
  • Support threat management and emergency response as the first point of contact for security and medical needs.
  • Assess and identify resources to ensure safety during executive travel.
  • Deliver briefings and make recommendations based on threat assessments.
  • Travel locally for protective operations, including advance site visits and planned events.
  • Coordinate logistics and plan details for the physical location of executives.
  • Provide security coverage for university executives and guests in a professional manner.
  • Coordinate with internal staff and department heads for joint support during activities and events.
  • Provide escorts to university guests and dignitaries as requested.
  • Operate motor vehicles safely and legally.
  • Respond to emergencies and render medical aid as needed.
  • Coordinate with public and private sector counterparts for security during meetings and events.
  • Identify and plan routes for executive travel and provide backup coverage as needed.
  • Cultivate relationships with local, state, and federal emergency services agencies.
  • Complete trip records and maintain communication with executive office staff regarding commitments and plans.
  • Research and write security plans and procedures as required.
  • Partner with internal teams on planning and logistics for university-sponsored events to address security matters.
  • Investigate threats and assess risks consistently.
  • Participate in training with Enterprise Risk Management Units.
  • Serve as a confidential aide to the Chief Security Officer, reviewing plans and making recommendations.
  • Monitor security systems to identify and resolve risks.
  • Manage internal and external security projects on behalf of the Chief Security Officer.
