About The Position

Position Summary: The Sterile Processing Supervisor plans and directs the cleaning, and processing of surgical instrument trays in the ASC. Works closely with vendors to ensure all instruments are accounted for in a timely fashion. In addition, the SPD Supervisor oversees all the SPD staff. This position reports directly to the Director. The Sterile Processing Supervisor is a leader of the SPD team who performs a variety of tasks and activities to meet the center’s needs. The SPD Supervisor must manage multiple demands on his/her time to support the activity of the Surgical Services staff, facilitate the timely flow of Surgery needs, and assist with decontamination of supplies and instruments, preparing packs for and completing sterilization of supplies and instruments, stocking/supplies, and supervising SPD staff’s work to ensure that the department meets sterilization standards and is compliant at all times.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree or equivalent, preferred.
  • 5 years of sterile processing management experience.
  • CRCST certification or CBSPDS certification required.
  • Must have the ability to teach and have demonstrated ability in written and oral communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Standing for long periods, walking, lifting, moving heavy equipment and patients, manual dexterity and other physical activities for patient care.
  • Able to lift 20 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes & directs the work of the Sterile Processing Department, to include the safe, efficient decontamination, preparation, & sterilization of all reprocessed instrumentation & equipment.
  • Supervises sterile processing staff including hiring, training & development, coaching, counseling, scheduling & evaluating of staff.
  • Applies policies & procedures for the decontamination, cleaning, sterilization & processing of sterile trays, procedure trays, case carts & surgical equipment.
  • Develops & administers in-service training on sterile processing techniques & procedures; determines competencies required & establishes methods for determining competency.
  • Evaluates equipment, supply & staffing requirements; oversees the requisitioning of surgical tools & implements & supplies; establishes & maintains procedures for rotation & inventory control of supplies & equipment
  • Reviews efficiency & effectiveness of unit operations in consultation w/ the Charge OR nurse and Director.
  • Assures proper preventive maintenance of equipment; establishes maintenance & replacement schedules; establishes & maintains quality control & infection control policies & procedures & other procedures required by regulatory or licensing agencies.
  • Maintains records; prepares a variety of correspondence & reports, including all documentation of sterilization practices, competencies, all in accordance w/ CMS, APIC, AORN & IHASCHM guidelines.
  • Keeps up with AAAHC guidelines
  • Maintains all competencies required by NJ DOH
  • Demonstrates compliance with all ASC and department policies and procedures. Maintains compliance with annual safety and competency testing.
  • Develops process improvements and procedural recommendations in consultation with the Director.
  • Participation in SASC infection control committee.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
