Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • One year of experience in medical interpreting.
  • Fluency in English and the target language, with expertise in medical terminology.
  • 40-60 hours of Medical interpretation certification from Bridging the Gap or similar institution required.
  • Broad knowledge of medical terminology and cultural advocacy.
  • Extensive knowledge of culture and cultural humility.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a representative of Emory Healthcare using knowledge and skills as a cultural broker and qualified medical interpreter.
  • Bridge linguistic and cultural barriers for non-English speaking patients interacting within the healthcare system.
  • Convey thoughts and intentions while maintaining the integrity of conversations.
  • Accurately transmit messages between non-English speaking patients and healthcare providers using various translation modes.
  • Provide education and consultation on culturally specific values, beliefs, and practices relevant to healthcare encounters.
  • Advocate for patients by understanding their culture and language.
  • Promote adherence to care plans to improve community health.
  • Support EHC staff and providers in overcoming cultural barriers.
  • Facilitate deeper understanding and enhance provider knowledge of different situations.
  • Provide system-wide and unit-specific training on interpretation services and compliance policies.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient information.
  • Simplify medical jargon for patient understanding.
  • Adhere to National Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care.
  • Assist with new employee orientation and mentoring.
  • Work in a fast-paced clinical environment with changing priorities.
  • Provide over-the-phone and video remote interpretation services.
  • Organize and coordinate interpreter schedules.
  • Update inventory of interpretation phones and office supplies.
  • Deliver interpretation equipment to units and clinics.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and prepare informational materials.
