About The Position

The Medical Interpreter at Intermountain Healthcare is responsible for providing both verbal and written language interpretation for patients, families, and caregivers. This full-time position is based at Primary Children's in Lehi, requiring on-site presence during weekdays. The role emphasizes clear communication, cultural sensitivity, and adherence to professional standards and ethics in medical interpreting.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a pre-hire skills assessment.
  • Successful completion of a 40-hr. Professional Medical Interpreting Course or equivalent qualifications.
  • Excellent oral and written command of both source and target languages.
  • Ability to perform consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation with high accuracy in both languages.
  • Demonstrated proficiency of medical terminology in both languages.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • National Certification as a Medical Interpreter through NBCMI or CCHI; Utah certification for Medical Language Interpreter through DOPL.
  • Experience as a professional medical interpreter.
  • Completion of a medical terminology course.

Responsibilities

  • Provides complete and accurate interpretation for patients, families, and Intermountain staff to facilitate clear communication, either in-person, over video, or telephone.
  • Uses communication methods appropriate for patient developmental age and mental condition.
  • Assists patients, families, and staff with sight translation of forms and is familiar with commonly used medical terminology.
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and renders unbiased interpretation to ensure an accurate exchange of information.
  • Adheres to accepted norms of professional ethics and standards of practice for Medical Interpreters, as well as Intermountain Policies and relevant legal requirements.
  • Manages time productively, responding to requests in a timely manner and providing staff with estimated times of arrival for interpretation assignments.
  • Coordinates interpretation assignments and keeps timely, accurate records of all interpretation encounters.
  • Uses computer, software, and internet tools for research, data entry, and other communication purposes within the work environment.
  • May provide translation services and completes translation assignments in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy.
