About The Position

The Surgical Technologist Extern PRN position at HCA Houston Healthcare Mainland offers students currently enrolled in a surgical technology program the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting. This externship allows individuals to assist licensed Surgical Technologists and surgeons while observing and learning about surgical procedures and patient care. The role is designed to enhance educational experiences through practical exposure to the surgical environment.

Requirements

  • Completion of prerequisite coursework in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and medical terminology required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Required.
  • Current enrollment in an accredited surgical technology program, or 6 months post graduation.

Responsibilities

  • Shadow and observe licensed Surgical Technologists and surgeons to gain a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
  • Assist in preparing operating rooms, ensuring they are clean, sterile, and well-stocked with the necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Help with the transportation of patients to and from the operating room under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional.
  • Observe and learn proper surgical aseptic techniques and infection control practices.
  • Assist with the preparation and handling of surgical instruments and supplies under the direct supervision of a licensed Surgical Technologist.
  • Provide basic patient care and comfort, such as answering questions, providing reassurance, and ensuring patient privacy.
  • Participate in educational opportunities, such as attending workshops, seminars, or training sessions, as directed by the supervising Surgical Technologist or department manager.
