About The Position

The Research Technician II position at Charles River Laboratories involves working within the Insourcing Solutions team to support the Animal Resources department, specifically focusing on high-throughput Animal Reproductive Technology. The role is critical in ensuring the well-being of research animals and involves various husbandry tasks, specialized techniques, and collaboration with team members to create custom mouse models and support laboratory operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences (Biology, Biochemistry, Animal Science, etc.) or related discipline.
  • 3 years of relevant experience in research animal science with rodents or rodent husbandry.
  • AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level is required.
  • Proficiency in mouse handling, sexing, and health assessment.
  • Demonstrated experience with mouse reproductive technology and techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with daily operations such as hormone administration, estrus check, and oviduct harvest.

  • Experience with data management systems in a professional environment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform rodent husbandry duties including room sanitation, cage change, daily health checks, and post-operative monitoring.
  • Manage breeder setup and takedown, tail biopsy for genotyping, and cross-fostering.
  • Conduct specialized tasks such as hormone administration via intraperitoneal injection, estrus check, and plug check.
  • Oversee colony and room transfers, pseudopregnant and stud male colony management, and stud male vasectomies.
  • Serve as a mentor to less experienced staff and review data processes and reports to the lab manager.
  • Comply with all SOPs, guidelines, and quality assurance standards related to laboratory mice care and use.
  • Participate in discussions at unit meetings and perform other duties as assigned.
