About The Position

Asilomar is located on the Monterey Peninsula in charming Pacific Grove, California. Its restored dune ecosystem and its historic “Arts and Crafts” style architecture (designed by the world-renowned Julia Morgan) come together to make Asilomar a designated National Historic Landmark. The 107 acres of beachfront property provide endless breathtaking views and opportunities for marine wildlife watching, golfing, & meeting and conference spaces, creating a meditative, restorative, and grounding place to work. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Sous Chef to support daily culinary operations and serve as a key leader within the kitchen. This role is ideal for an individual with exceptional cooking skills, a deep understanding of kitchen operations, and a demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team—especially in the absence of the Executive Chef and Chef de Cuisine. The Sous Chef will help drive culinary excellence, uphold high standards of quality and safety, and foster a positive and productive work environment.Compensation DataCOMPENSATION: The Hourly rate for this position is $25.00 to $35.00. Requirements

  • Two to three years of progressive experience in a related culinary role.
  • Two to three years of post-secondary education preferred, ideally with a degree in Culinary Arts or a related field.
  • Advanced understanding of culinary principles, techniques, and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience managing personnel and effectively resolving operational challenges.
  • Strong verbal, written, and reading communication skills.
  • A hands-on leader who actively supports team members and operations, with flexibility to work event-driven schedules including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and support production, preparation, and presentation of menu items as directed by the Executive Chef, ensuring consistent quality across all units.
  • Maintain inventory levels, accurately record deliveries, resolve discrepancies, and support proper storage procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety standards, including proper handling of food and equipment per company and regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen environment at all times.
  • Lead and support team members through hiring, scheduling, training, coaching, and performance management while fostering open communication.
  • Prepare and cook menu items according to standardized recipes and production guidelines.
  • Set up and maintain organized workstations with necessary ingredients and equipment.
  • Accurately measure, weigh, and prepare ingredients to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Safely operate kitchen equipment including knives, ovens, stoves, slicers, and mixers.
  • Execute cooking techniques such as baking, roasting, broiling, and steaming to deliver high-quality dishes.
  • Plate and present food according to established standards.
  • Provide exceptional customer service with a professional and positive demeanor.
  • Follow all company safety, sanitation, and operational policies.
  • Safeguard company assets and maintain operational integrity.
