About The Position

The Sonoma Water Accountant III position is a promotional role intended for current employees of the County of Sonoma or its affiliated agencies. This role involves managing complex accounting activities for Sonoma Water, overseeing accounting work for various funds, and supervising an accounting team. The Accountant III will be responsible for preparing financial reports, managing procurement processes, and ensuring compliance with accounting regulations.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time paid work experience in a position comparable to Accountant II in a local government agency or in a professional level auditing or accounting position.
  • Experience supervising technical and clerical accounting staff is desirable.
  • Possession of a Certified Public Accountant's Certificate or a college degree in accounting, finance, or business administration with relevant accounting coursework.

  • Experience developing internal controls and documenting accounting processes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex accounting activities required by Sonoma Water.
  • Manage accounting work for over sixty water transmission, sanitation, and flood control funds.
  • Prepare a variety of accounting, statistical, budget, and financial reports.
  • Interpret and apply various accounting/financial laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate and manage procurement processes including processing Purchase Orders and Agreements.
  • Analyze and reconcile project cost accounting processes.
  • Oversee year-end activities, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and water billing functions.
  • Assist in providing financial data for fiscal audits.
  • Supervise an accounting team including recruitment, selection, mentoring, performance evaluation, and training.
