Department Ultrasound Job Summary Under the direction of a radiologist, performs ultrasound examinations at a technical level not requiring constant supervision. Performs a variety of technical imaging procedures that require independent judgment, appropriate technical skills in ultrasonography, and a commitment to patient safety, all of which are considered requisite professional characteristics for individuals assuming the position as a sonographer.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree Completion of two year hospital or college program accredited by the American Medical Association. Required
  • Associate's Degree RDMS-Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - ARDMS - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • less than 1 year 2-12 months working in radiography experience Required
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required
  • RDMS-Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - ARDMS - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Must show a high degree of judgment and skill in the use of US equipment and related technology.
  • Knowledge of how to address age-specific care needs of patients.
  • Demonstrated technical skill sets in the performance of US imaging studies.
  • Effective interpersonal skill sets that lead to productive communications and collaborations.
  • Competency in interpreting physician order requests for US imaging studies.
  • Ability to exercise prudent judgment in selecting and configuring equipment settings to compensate for patient physiologic variances.
  • Ability to consistently produce quality images of various anatomical structures.

Responsibilities

  • Performs high quality US imaging studies by selecting specific software parameters that will produce a quality image for use by radiologists in their determination of a diagnosis. Operates US equipment to produce and record images of the motion, shape, and composition of blood, organs, tissues, and bodily masses such as fluid accumulations. Observes equipment monitor during imaging scan to ensure that the image produced is of diagnostic quality, making adjustments to the equipment as required. Selects appropriate equipment settings and adjusts patient positions to obtain the best sites and angles. (40%)
  • Operates, on a day-to-day basis, PACS applications to include: archiving activities; image auto-routing and pre-fetching tasks; image quality assurance; and other related activities. Uses Radiology Information System (RIS) system to input patient examination data and to place patient orders (as appropriate). (10%)
  • Ensures patient safety, comfort, and personal dignity by following appropriate patient care guidelines to include use of 2 patient identifiers. Prepares patient for an ultrasound study by explaining the study, transferring this individual to the examination table, applying gel, and positioning the patient appropriately for the US study. (20%)
  • Verifies the physician order and relevant patient’s history in the medical chart. Prior to performance of an US examination, consults with the relevant radiologist to obtain a written imaging study protocol. (10%)
  • Documents, as appropriate, all pertinent information on clinical questionnaires. The sonographer scans all relevant clinical information into the PACS, assigns prioritization box for the radiologists’ work list, and then transmits current (and comparison images, when applicable) to the PACS. (5%)
  • Assists in the maintenance of department inventory by ordering, stocking, and performing inventory checks on those medical supplies utilized when performing US examinations. Consistent availability of requisite US medical supplies indicate exceeds standard. (5%)
  • Maintains imaging and processing equipment by performing scheduled cleanings and tests; results of all cleanings and tests are documented, as appropriate. Contacts service personnel and notifies supervisory staff of equipment malfunctions. (5%)
  • Maintains a clean and orderly working environment through wiping down examination tables, changing linens, stocking supplies, and washing/disinfecting US equipment. (5%)
