About The Position

Klein Tools is a dynamic, fast-paced and results driven company dedicated to launching hundreds of innovative products each year. We are seeking a qualified Product Designer responsible for developing accurate and complete solid and/or surfaced models of new product concepts. This position will optimize and merge the design requirements and its production method with minimal direction of an engineer. The Product Designer will act as a technical expert to develop new product concepts using the SolidWorks CAD system or other CAD software based on concepts, sketches, or interactions under limited direction of an engineer. Responsibilities include conceptualizing ideas into functional, working models based on best principles of mechanical design, manufacturing and user interaction, and creating complex 3D technical models from translated surfaces, imported solids or Industrial Design with limited direction of an engineer.

Requirements

  • Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Drafting and Design or equivalent experience.
  • 7 years of direct CAD design experience with SolidWorks CAD software or equivalent 3D modeling software.
  • Experience creating detailed engineering drawings and 3D solid and surface models based on concepts with limited direction from an engineer.
  • Experience working with high volume consumer products using manufacturing processes such as injection molding, stamping, die casting, forging, and blow molding.
  • Knowledge of material properties, mold design, sliding cores, complex parting line definition, and draft strategy.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook).

  • Familiarity with machine shop practices and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop accurate and complete solid and/or surfaced models of new product concepts.
  • Optimize and merge design requirements with production methods with minimal direction from an engineer.
  • Conceptualize ideas into functional, working models based on mechanical design principles.
  • Design 3D models for manufacture in areas such as injection molding, stamping, forging, die casting, and blow molding.
  • Revise 3D models of product concepts based on component and assembly design knowledge.
  • Recommend appropriate tolerances on components based on stack-up analysis and manufacturing input.
  • Mentor CAD Designers and Drafters with less experience.
  • Assist in development and maintenance of 3D design standards including model structure in SolidWorks.
  • Prioritize work to align with departmental goals and project teams.
  • Prepare Engineering Change Order (ECO) documentation accurately and completely.
  • Maintain close contact with associated engineering groups and project teams.
