About The Position

The Solid Waste Supervisor is responsible for overseeing solid waste management and recycling activities within Baltimore County. This role involves planning, coordinating, and supervising operations at various facilities, including landfills and material recovery facilities. The supervisor ensures compliance with regulations, manages personnel, and addresses public inquiries related to solid waste services.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
  • Five years' experience in solid waste management.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a Class C Maryland driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional experience in solid waste management may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  • Additional education in business administration, environmental science, communications, engineering, or a closely related field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years for the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises solid waste management and recycling activities.
  • Monitors refuse disposal facilities, including landfills and material recovery facilities.
  • Provides daily supervision, instruction, and training to shift personnel.
  • Maintains daily logs and production records related to recycling operations.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and participates in training programs to enhance job performance.
  • Assists site managers with daily activities.
  • Supervises labor force in the operation of single stream recycling systems.
  • Responsible for processing, sorting, baling, and shipping of recycled material.
  • Operates heavy equipment and county vehicles as needed.
  • Plans and coordinates curbside refuse/recycling collection programs.
  • Monitors the performance of refuse/recycling collectors to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Surveys areas and assesses refuse/recycling collector performance for potential service modifications.
  • Fields and responds to inquiries and complaints from the public.
  • Represents the Bureau at neighborhood association meetings and serves as a liaison with private collectors.
  • Investigates and issues landfill authorization permits and prepares reports.
