About The Position

The San Joaquin County Public Works - Solid Waste Division has part-time employment opportunities. This recruitment will be used to fill those part time positions and to establish an eligible referral pool which may be used to fill future part-time opportunities. Pre-Employment Physical, Drug Screen and Background: Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination, a pre-employment drug screen and a background investigation as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible candidate has passed the drug screen, physical and successfully completed the background process. The County pays for the initial drug screen and physical. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an application. Requirements

  • License: Possession of a valid California driver's license.
  • Laws, regulations, ordinances, and procedures related to solid waste disposal; operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment commonly used at refuse transfer facilities and landfills; safe work practices and procedures; proper methods of lifting and carrying of heavy loads; occupational hazards and safety procedures.
  • Recognize and separate recyclable materials; recognize prohibited materials; direct traffic; operate light and heavy equipment commonly used at refuse transfer facilities and landfills; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform heavy manual labor, occasionally under adverse conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and sorts incoming waste for prohibited materials; evaluates refuse to determine acceptability.
  • Monitors and directs traffic for safe dumping of refuse; maintains required logs and records, including a daily log of vehicles using the facility; documents and reports suspicious or unusual incidents; ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Learns to safely operate a variety of equipment such as loaders, forklifts, backhoes, and other light/heavy equipment; learns to perform routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned equipment; reports mechanical defects or needed servicing of equipment.
  • Levels loaded transfer trailers; covers loads.
  • Separates recyclable material from incoming refuse. Keeps grounds and adjacent land free from refuse and debris; cleans debris from equipment.
  • Responds to questions and inquiries from the public.
  • May drive light truck. Performs manual labor as assigned.
  • May provide direction to Alternative Work Program and inmate program crews in proper work procedures.
