About The Position

Solid Waste Driver S ummary : Under basic supervision, operates specialized trucks and heavy motorized equipment used for a variety of job functions at Solid Waste division of the Public Works Department (PWD); operates vehicles, equipment, and tools in compliance with all safety regulations and standard procedures. Essential Functions : Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following : Operates a variety of machinery to move and transfer solid waste, refuse, and discarded materials; operates specialized vehicles for collection and emptying of trash containers. Maintains and cleans equipment and reports mechanical defects and vehicle maintenance needs. Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries. Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance. Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred
  • 2 year's work experience operating heavy equipment, preferably with the City of Odessa OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Knowledge of Operation, maintenance, and capabilities of heavy power-driven equipment
  • Knowledge of Safety policies and standards, and safe driving practices in public streets
  • Skill in Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, vehicle inspection procedures, and making minor adjustments to operating controls
  • Skill in Following standard operating and safety procedures and verbal and written instructions
  • Skill in Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers
  • Texas State Commercial Driver's License Class B is required
  • Special vehicle training and licensing may be required
  • City approved safety shoes must be worn
