About The Position

This is a driving position working with the collection of solid waste, trash, brush, or recycled materials. The employee is required to operate a solid waste collection vehicle in tight, confined locations and in the presence of other vehicles and pedestrians. Work is performed under the direction of a Supervisor. All employees share components of leadership, management, technical, and team skills to assist in making the City of Largo the community of choice in Tampa Bay. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • One year experience in the operation of commercial vehicles requiring a Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B
  • Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B
  • Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of the operation of commercial vehicles requiring a Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B
  • Knowledge of the hazards of operation and of appropriate safety rules and regulations
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instruction and to work independently in the performance of regular duties
  • Basic computer and/or tablet skills for effective operation and troubleshooting of routing equipment
  • Ability to safely operate equipment, vehicles, and tools using close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus
  • Ability to read standard print on a computer monitor, routing devices, tablets, and street/road signs
  • Proficiency with the City radio, routing devices and tablets, shovels, rakes, and brooms
  • DRUG TESTING (Safety Sensitive)

  • Follows suggested procedures to assure the highest standards of risk management, employee safety and risk avoidance
  • Operates two of the following vehicles: front-loader, roll-off, claw, auto side-loader, and/or manual rear-loader used in the collection and transportation of solid waste, trash, brush, or recycled materials, to be determined by the Solid Waste Manager
  • A minimum of one hundred sixty (160) hours of operation of each truck is required for the first year
  • A minimum of eighty (80) hours of operation of each truck is required in each subsequent year to maintain classification
  • Operates other solid waste collection equipment on a temporary, trainee, or emergency basis
  • Ensures truck is operational, fuels truck, washes, greases, conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections, reports need for maintenance or repair of equipment to Supervisor
  • Follows standard safety precautions in the operation of the equipment
  • Performs routine housekeeping on the assigned piece of equipment
  • Notifies Supervisor of issues or concerns requiring attention
  • Teaches trainee drivers the proper operation of the solid waste vehicles
  • Supports honest and transparent decision-making
  • Collaborates with all team members in a way that builds upon ideas and takes personal accountability and ownership of projects, roles, and assignments
  • Openly exhibits a positive attitude, in words and action, and encourages others to do the same
  • Performs related work as required
  • Work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency
  • Subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description
