About The Position

We are currently seeking a highly capable, self-directed individual to serve as the Solid Waste and Sustainability District Manager at Champ Landfill in Maryland Heights, Missouri. This is one of the Midwest’s most exciting leadership roles in the solid waste and renewable energy sector. Champ Landfill Background: Situated in an active limestone quarry, Champ is a premier resource management center delivering renewable energy, safe materials handling and disposal services. Formerly the Fred Weber Sanitary Landfill, Champ is the largest solid waste facility in Missouri in the middle of its largest city. The site’s neighbors include two schools, a church, multiple businesses including an adventure park, St. Louis’ largest amphitheater, a casino, corporate woods, and two large subdivisions. Most of Champ’s neighbors are active partners and/or participants in the Facility’s sustainability initiatives. Your Role: You will head a team of site and region managers to continue Champ’s transformation from being a landfill to a facility delivering sustainable solutions for the region and striving for continued financial growth while achieving demonstrable reductions in the site’s carbon footprint.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in engineering, the sciences, or business.
  • 10+ years management level experience in solid waste, mining, oil & gas, or civil construction.
  • Demonstrated highly effective leadership of diverse groups of blue and white-collar people.
  • Knowledge of waste hauling, recycling, and disposal operating systems.
  • Broad knowledge of environmental and health/safety regulations and laws.
  • Flexibility in spending several days at a time being away from home.
  • Accustomed to being exposed to challenging physical environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of over 25 professionals to efficiently manage over 3,500 tons of waste per day.
  • Commit to human health/safety, compliance, and environmental stewardship.
  • Oversee intricate landfill gas collection/control and leachate removal/pretreatment systems.
  • Partner closely with local hauling company managers and municipal, commercial, roll-off, and special waste partners.
  • Manage coordination between multiple on-site parties including an active quarry company, asphalt plant, concrete plant, and landfill gas-to-energy ventures.
  • Run the business of Champ, including budgeting, forecasting expenses, and managing capital purchases.
  • Drive revenue creation, analyze/execute pricing strategies, and manage customer contracts.
  • Lead construction and drive growth of the Waste Connections Sustainability systems and campus.
  • Evaluate new opportunities to harness value from discarded materials and assess viability of technologies.
  • Develop relationships and partnerships with municipal partners, businesses, regulators, schools, church officials, local reporters, and special interest groups.
  • Attend/participate in government, community, and business events.
  • Coach and develop employees at all levels in the organization.
