About The Position

The Sierra Lobo Rocket Technology and Engineering Services II (RTES II) contract provides advise and assist services (A&AS) at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards AFB, California. AFRL conducts rocket propellant and rocket propulsion research, as well as developing associated test processes and facilities. Sierra Lobo offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies. We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems. Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This position will be located at Edwards AFB, CA.

Requirements

  • An understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
  • Familiarity with rocket propulsion desirable, but not necessary.
  • Familiarity with CAD, CFD and FEA analysis methods desirable.
  • Good command of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Good knowledge of the English language.
  • Ability to operate in a team environment.
  • Good interpersonal, reporting and communication skills (written and verbal).

Responsibilities

  • Join an established team of scientists and engineers performing basic and applied research in solid rocket propulsion modeling, simulation and testing at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Rocket Propulsion Division (AFRL/RQR).
  • Participate in analysis of existing and future solid rocket motor systems through one or more of the following activities: Using and implementing advanced modeling and simulation software to include: CFD and FEA analysis of propellants, nozzles, and other components.
  • Conduct heat transfer and erosion modeling.
  • Use advanced tools to evaluate current and future programs.
  • Develop test and analysis methods for validation of software tools.
  • Design and analyze rocket motor components.
  • Interface with manufacturing and testing groups/facilities and personnel.
  • Participate in multi-organization Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) involving Modeling and Simulation of Solid Rocket Motors.
  • Deliver oral presentations of complex ideas involving rocket motors, modeling, and testing.
