About the position

The Soil Scientist position within the Department of Agriculture involves providing technical guidance in the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of soil and water conservation practices. The incumbent will assist in various soil resource activities, ensuring compliance with national standards, and will engage in educational outreach related to soil information.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for Area Soil Resource activities to ensure quality and compliance with National Cooperative Soil Survey standards.
  • Conduct investigations to determine soil suitability for various applications such as crops, highways, and structures.
  • Furnish technical assistance on soil interpretations for urban, industrial, and resource maps for specific land uses.
  • Collect soil samples for special projects and laboratory analysis.
  • Write technical and non-technical articles related to soil services and delivery.
  • Prepare documentation including soil profile descriptions, records data, and compile field notes.
  • Assist District Conservationists in educational and informational activities related to public understanding of soil information.
  • Serve as a trainer to provide instruction on soil characteristics, properties, limitations, and mapping techniques.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National status is required.
  • A degree in Soil Science or a closely related discipline with at least 30 semester hours in biological, physical, or earth sciences, including 15 hours in soil-related subjects.
  • For GS-7 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 or higher, or superior academic achievement in a relevant bachelor's degree program.
  • For GS-9 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7 or higher, or two years of progressively higher graduate education in soil science or a related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with soil resource inventories and watershed restoration needs inventories.
  • Familiarity with laboratory analysis of soil samples and classification of soil properties.
