About The Position

The Soil Scientist position involves providing technical guidance and leadership in the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of soil and water conservation practices. The incumbent will work closely with engineers and conservationists to ensure that soil resource activities meet national standards and assist in educating the public and NRCS personnel about soil characteristics and management.

Requirements

• Must be a US Citizen or US National.
• Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator's license.
• Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.
• Direct Deposit is required for federal payments.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with soil resource inventories and watershed restoration needs inventories.
• Knowledge of soil classification standards and laboratory analysis techniques.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for the Area Soil Resource activities ensuring quality and quantity of work meets National Cooperative Soil Survey standards.
• Conduct investigations to determine soil suitability for various applications such as crops and infrastructure.
• Furnish technical assistance on soil interpretations for urban and industrial uses, as well as resource maps.
• Collect soil samples for special projects and laboratory analysis.
• Write technical and non-technical articles related to soil services and delivery.
• Prepare documentation including soil profile descriptions and field notes.
• Assist District Conservationists in public education and information activities regarding soil information.
• Serve as a trainer for NRCS personnel and other Soil Services customers on soil characteristics and mapping techniques.
