Like Google's own ambitions, the work of a Software Engineer goes beyond just Search. Software Engineering Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of Engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure Engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a Software Engineering Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. Teams work all across the company, in areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design; the list goes on and is growing every day. Operating with scale and speed, our exceptional software engineers are just getting started -- and as a manager, you guide the way. With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally. As a Software Engineering Manager, you will be part of the Online Voices Presence and Value team to build the next generation of experiences and tools for content creators on Search and Discover. You will have experience managing engineering teams to deliver external end-user facing product innovation, achieving product market fit, and scaling the solution. Our work is a zero to one effort in creating new product value for social media content creators on Google Search and Discover, where you’ll be a key player in ensuring a thriving future for Google Search through innovating and delivering compelling product experiences. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development and 3 years of experience with developing and launching end-user products.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role and 2 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.
  • Experience building and managing distributed software systems and infrastructure.
  • Experience with product innovation such as 0 to 1, with consumer-facing internet products, and with web and mobile technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience working in a cross-functional organization.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role, overseeing projects.
  • Experience with systems that process user generated content or integrate with social media platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, mentor, and grow an engineering team, including responsibility for hiring, performance reviews, career development, and compensation planning.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, ownership, psychological safety, and innovation within the team.
  • Lead complex initiatives to deliver rapid user-facing product innovation in search.
  • Lead the team in defining and adhering to best engineering practices and operational excellence standards.
  • Drive execution and delivery against the roadmap, managing project risks, resource allocation, and dependencies with external teams.
  • Serve as the primary technical partner to Product Managers, UX Designers, UX Researchers, and Data Scientists, translating product needs into clear, actionable engineering goals.
  • Debug complex organizational and process issues to unblock the team and optimize workflow.
