Your focus will be on leading engineering teams responsible for the core data infrastructure and delivery systems that underpin onX's suite of apps. You will be a part of our Core Services engineering organization that builds and operates the platform systems other teams depend on. This role will serve as the engineering leader for our Connected Content and Content Delivery teams at onX and will report to the Director of Engineering TECHNOLOGIES WE USE Go, Elixir, Rust Python, Swift, Kotlin, JavaScript, Java, Git / GitHub, Google Cloud Build, Travis CI, Kubernetes, Docker, MySQL, PostGIS, Linux, Google Cloud Platform, and many open source mapping tools.

Requirements

  • At least five (5) years of experience directly managing software engineers.
  • Proven ability to lead teams building platform, infrastructure, or data systems that other engineering teams depend on.
  • Experience establishing operational excellence practices: SLOs, incident management, on-call rotations, and production reliability frameworks
  • You have led teams through ambiguous, fast-changing product stages and can bring structure and clarity without slowing pace.
  • You have improved engineering velocity, quality, and observability across teams, and are comfortable introducing or maturing workflows, processes, and metrics.
  • You can connect engineering work to business goals, making decisions that balance customer value, quality, and impact.
  • You're comfortable using AI-assisted tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and velocity, and can help your team adopt them effectively.
  • You communicate well with executives and non-technical leaders

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with data systems architecture, GraphQL federation, or distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with mapping, geospatial, or navigation technologies.
  • Experience designing or leading complex server-side architectures for high-volume consumer-facing products.
  • Experience working with APIs, platform components, or developer experience tooling that support large-scale B2C applications.
  • You understand how product, growth, and revenue metrics influence technical priorities in a fast-growing business.
  • Experience with GCP, Kubernetes, or similar cloud infrastructure.
  • You have a B.S. or M.S. in computer science or a related field or experience

Responsibilities

  • Make great engineers better. You'll support your teammates with individual goal-setting, professional development, and mentoring. You'll coach engineers through structured growth plans and partner with senior/staff-level ICs to set technical direction for the teams.
  • Make great software. You'll work with your teams to ensure you're delivering maintainable, high-quality platform systems that internal and external customers depend on. You will lead your teams in design, development, testing, deployment, and operations, with a focus on reliability and developer experience
  • Build great teams. You'll work closely with your peers to hire smart, creative, and kind engineers. You'll be responsible for building and sustaining a healthy team culture where ownership and collaboration are the norm
  • Own operational excellence. You'll establish and maintain production reliability practices including SLO definition and monitoring, incident management, on-call sustainability, and postmortem culture.
  • Collaborate. You'll manage dependencies between functional teams and facilitate collaboration across engineering, Product, Product Design, and business stakeholders. Your teams build foundational capabilities used across onX's apps, making cross-functional alignment critical
  • Lead through others. You can drive a project yourself or direct teams and technical leaders to a desired outcome. You provide thought partnership for your team, challenging and elevating your team to develop robust architectural and technical strategies.
  • Translate. You'll translate business strategy, customer insights, and organizational priorities into clear engineering direction, helping your team understand the "why" behind the roadmap and how their work connects to onX's goals.
  • Communicate. You'll err on the side of over-communicating. You'll work closely with product managers and engineers to set ambitious but attainable goals, articulate the value of platform work, and build organizational buy-in for infrastructure investments.
